Gender-based violence is a public health problem, one with devastating consequences. In Nigeria, Nafisa Ibrahim—a healthcare worker and nurse-midwife—is dedicated to responding to challenges related to gender-based violence (GBV) identification and care. Through USAID’s Integrated Health Program, Ms. Ibrahim received training in GBV prevention and response, and today she is not only treating GBV survivors but working toward and advocating for a stronger GBV response system.

In honor of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV, Ms. Ibrahim sat down with WI-HER’s Helen John to discuss why she became a nurse-midwife and how she’s responding to GBV data to improve care and treatment in Bauchi State, Nigeria. “According to the Nigerian demographic data survey of 2018… the data in Bauchi state is showing that incidences of GBV is more than the national data. It is indicating physical violence of 21.7%, and emotional violence of 57.3%,” she says during her interview. “Honestly, if we are to look at this data, we will realize the people of Bauchi state are experiencing a lot of violence, ranging from emotional, physical, and so on… we have to do a lot of work to reduce the incidence or occurrence through community mobilization and sensitizing them on ways of preventing this occurrence of this GBV issues.”
